The die-stamping process is a craftsman’s skill that requires pinpoint accuracy. A die for each colour is carved into steel in revese for each colour. As you can see, lettering has to be done in reverse to print the right way round. Here you see a block being engraved for each colour, gold, silver, black, blue, red and green.
Once the dies are cut and on the press, they can be inked up ready for printing. Each piece of paper is hand-fed into the printing press.
